Project Overview

The project, ‘Grid Readiness for EV: Enablers and Technological Developments (GREET)’, addresses India's ambitious goal of achieving 30% EV penetration in new private vehicle sales by 2030. This proposal aims to develop a comprehensive and future-ready EV ecosystem, addressing technological, societal, and policy challenges. With India’s current EV penetration at approximately 6.5% only, the project proposes solutions to manage the surge in EV adoption and its impact on the grid, and to develop the associated technologies. A critical component of the project is the integration of EV infrastructure with the power grid. This involves assessing the impact of large-scale EV adoption on grid stability, power quality, and protection. The project emphasizes using EVs as storage systems capable of offering ancillary grid services such as frequency regulation and load balancing through Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) and Grid-to-Vehicle (G2V) operations. Additionally, a robust cybersecurity framework will be developed to protect against vulnerabilities in the interconnected EV charging networks. The technological innovations in the GREET project include the development of low- and high-power EV chargers, leveraging Solid-State Transformer (SST) technology for compact, efficient, and direct medium-voltage grid connections. The project also aims to standardize charging infrastructure through the creation of modular and universal systems, designed to support diverse vehicle categories. Advanced scheduling algorithms and smart energy management systems will optimize the integration of renewable energy sources, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and EVs, ensuring efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Policy and social inclusion form another cornerstone of the project. GREET proposes actionable policy frameworks to address public resistance, enhance trust in EV technologies, and promote workforce training for maintenance and repair. The project also emphasizes the need for economic and regulatory strategies that incentivize EV adoption and ensure compatibility with grid requirements. The project includes a field-validation phase to ensure the practical applicability of its solutions. By targeting Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 5–6, GREET ensures the transition from research to real-world deployment. The project outcomes include robust charging infrastructure, streamlined grid interaction, and improved public confidence, fostering the accelerated adoption of EVs. Led by a multidisciplinary consortium of researchers and industry experts from premier institutions, the project combines academic rigor with practical insights. By addressing range anxiety, grid compatibility, and public acceptance, the GREET project aims to position India as a global leader in sustainable EV infrastructure and innovation. This transformative approach promises to revolutionize India's energy and transportation landscape, supporting a cleaner and more resilient future.
