Project Overview

Water is a vital natural resource for human survival and ecosystem health, but over 50 communities lack access to clean drinking water solutions. In developing countries, people depend on contaminated water sources, leading to increased waterborne diseases. Amrita initiated the Jivamritam Purified Drinking Water Program to combat this issue. The program has conducted data analysis of community-specific water quality in over 10,000 communities in Kerala, with sustainable solutions deployed in 250 communities across 14 districts.Over the past decade, more than 90% of drinking water samples were found to be faecally contaminated and chemically present. Contamination due to Coliform has seen a drastic increase, while contamination due to E.Coli has been steadily decreasing. The study also found that pH varies between different months without a strong correlation with rainfall or temperature. The challenges include increasing anthropogenic activity, population growth, urbanization, extreme weather patterns, and non-access to real-time information on water contamination levels and their impact on public health. This leads to community-level health impacts from continuous and prolonged usage of contaminated water. To address these challenges, an IoT framework is proposed for continuous, real-time monitoring of water quality indicators and Jivamritam Drinking Water Purification System automation. The GEL-IoT framework can disseminate data captured by monitoring techniques, empowering community members and stakeholders to be "water-wise." AI-based decision models will be developed to forecast changes in WQI based on climatic variations, promoting the sustainability of water purification systems and the formation of water-wise communities.
