Madhav Gadgil (1942–2026): A Visionary Ecologist

About

India lost one of its most respected environmental thinkers with the passing of Madhav Gadgil, renowned ecologist and conservationist, on 7 January 2026. His life’s work played a crucial role in shaping how India understands, protects, and manages its rich natural heritage.

A Lifelong Bond with Nature

Born in Pune, Maharashtra, Madhav Gadgil developed a deep connection with nature at an early age. This passion guided him towards ecology as a career. After studying in India, he pursued higher education at Harvard University, where he trained as an ecologist. He later returned to India with a clear goal to build strong ecological research and conservation systems rooted in Indian realities.

Dr. Gadgil was one of the founders of modern ecological science in the country. He established the Centre for Ecological Sciences at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, which went on to become one of India’s leading hubs for ecological and environmental research. Over his long career, he published hundreds of research papers and books, making complex ecological ideas accessible to students, researchers, and policymakers alike. One of Dr. Gadgil’s most widely known contributions was his leadership of the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel. The panel studied the fragile ecosystems of the Western Ghats, one of the world’s richest biodiversity regions and recommended measures to protect them from unplanned development. The report strongly argued that environmental protection and human well-being must go hand in hand. What made Gadgil’s approach unique was his belief that local communities are key to conservation. He actively promoted people’s participation in documenting and protecting biodiversity through initiatives such as People’s Biodiversity Registers. According to him, traditional knowledge and scientific research must work together for sustainable development.

Honours and Recognition

For his outstanding contributions, Madhav Gadgil received several national and international honours, including the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan. In 2024, he was also awarded the UNEP Champions of the Earth – Lifetime Achievement Award, recognising his decades-long commitment to environmental protection and sustainability. Dr. Madhav Gadgil will be remembered not only as a brilliant scientist, but also as a thoughtful public intellectual who consistently spoke for ecological balance, social equity, and responsible development. His ideas continue to inspire scientists, policymakers, students, and citizens to view nature not as a resource to be exploited, but as a shared heritage to be protected. His life reminds us that caring for the environment is not a choice, but a responsibility we owe to future generations.
