Department of Atomic Energy (DAE)

About

Established in 1954, the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) is a Government of India department under the direct charge of the Prime Minister, responsible for the development and peaceful applications of atomic energy. The Department formulates and implements programmes related to nuclear power, advanced research, and the application of nuclear science and technology to support the country's energy security, scientific advancement, and socio-economic development.

DAE oversees a network of research centres, industrial organizations, public sector undertakings, grant-in-aid institutions, and specialized boards engaged in research and technology development across nuclear science, reactor technologies, atomic minerals, fuel cycle, fusion research, materials science, electronics, instrumentation, and accelerator technologies.

Beyond nuclear power, the Department promotes the application of radiation and isotope technologies in healthcare, agriculture, food preservation, industry, water management, and environmental protection. It also supports frontier research, human resource development, and collaboration with academic and research institutions to strengthen India's scientific capabilities.
