Established in 1986, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, is the nodal department for promoting biotechnology research, innovation, and application in the country. The Department supports scientific research, technology development, human resource capacity building, and the creation of advanced research infrastructure across diverse areas of biotechnology.
DBT plays a pivotal role in addressing national priorities in healthcare, agriculture, food and nutrition, environmental sustainability, and bio-based industries through science-driven solutions. The Department also fosters entrepreneurship, industry–academia collaboration, translational research, and international partnerships to accelerate the development and deployment of biotechnology-based innovations.
Through its programmes, autonomous institutions, funding mechanisms, and strategic initiatives, DBT continues to strengthen India's biotechnology ecosystem and contribute to the country's scientific, technological, and socio-economic development.
