Startup Develops Compact Laser Communication Technology for Faster and Secure Satellite Connectivity

As the demand for faster and more secure communication grows in the space sector, Astrogate Labs Private Limited is working on advanced laser communication systems designed for satellites and remote connectivity applications.

Founded by Nitish Kumar Singh, Jayaraman Yogeshwaran and Subhajit Chakraborty, the startup is supported by the IIITB COMET Foundation at International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Bangalore.

The team has developed AstroLink-micro, a compact laser communication terminal for microsatellites operating in low earth orbit. The technology enables high-speed data transmission of up to 10 Gbps while maintaining secure communication links with optical ground stations. Designed to be lightweight and compact, the system is capable of operating without continuous host-assisted pointing, making satellite communication more efficient.

Beyond space applications, the underlying technology can also support high-speed terrestrial connectivity in remote and difficult regions where laying optical fibre networks is expensive or time-consuming. This could help improve communication access in islands, rural areas and geographically challenging locations.

The startup has already delivered a 2.5 Gbps variant terminal to Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and successfully carried out compatibility testing with the University of Western Australia’s TeraNet Optical Ground Station. The company was also recognised with the Emerging Technology of the Year Award at the ISpA Industry Awards, presented by Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh.

With indigenous technology development at its core, the startup is contributing to India’s growing space technology ecosystem while building solutions for next-generation communication systems.
