Recognizing the importance of managing traffic to reduce the congestion costs and the strength of Artificial Intelligence in providing evolving solutions, the present study aims to develop an Artificial Intelligence based system for effectively managing traffic in real time for recurrent and non-recurrent congestion scenarios for the Indian urban road network. The proposed system relies on a simple network level model that captures the dynamics of the transport network and an AI based optimization module to simultaneously determine traffic signal parameters such as cycle lengths, effective green times, and phase plans for each intersection in the network. The effectiveness of the proposed integrated traffic management system shall be demonstrated using a calibrated microsimulation model developed for a part of the Kolkata urban traffic network in VISSIM.
