This project focuses on minimizing post-harvest onion losses caused by seasonal fluctuations in temperature and humidity, which lead to rotting, sprouting, and shrinkage. Currently, onions are stored in bulk in ventilated warehouses, resulting in storage losses as high as 20–40%. The highest losses occur when storage temperatures range between 5°C to 25°C with relative humidity levels of 65–75%. To address this, a smart, IoT-enabled storage solution—SAgriSTM—has been developed by TIH-IoT, IIT Bombay, in collaboration with ICAR-DOGR. The system monitors key microclimate parameters like temperature, humidity, CO₂, and VOC gases using ACenSsTM sensor nodes and the ACenSGTM IoT gateway. The current phase of the project involves the design and implementation of a forced ventilation system that dynamically responds to microclimate conditions, thereby reducing physiological weight loss, sprouting, and rotting. This system aims to enhance shelf life and reduce overall storage losses by creating a controlled storage environment tailored for onions.
