This project develops an AI system powered by Large Language Models for streamlining the process of analyzing and managing legal cases available in pdf/html format. This system aims to provide accessible legal counselling to the general public, generate concise lay summaries of legal cases in English and various low-resource Indian languages, and retrieve relevant laws and cases through metadata-based searches. Additionally, it will execute complex legal tasks, including rhetorical role labeling, Legal Semantic Indexing (LSI), Precedent Case Retrieval (PCR), and document summarization. The system will also handle basic user queries related to specific case judgments. To facilitate broad accessibility and practical deployment, we will develop lightweight Small Language Models optimized for performance on resource-constrained devices, such as social robots functioning as legal assistants.
