A collagen based multifunctional group polymerexhibiting molecular weight in the range of 3000-5000 D, particle size of 310-950nm. A very wide stability of the polymer in a wide range of pH, temperature and chemicals ensures significant application in chemicals and processing industries. The product finds application in leather processing industry as a chrome exhaust aid in chrome tanning, whereby the exhaustion level of chromium is enhanced significantly to more than 95%. Further, a process for the preparation of the polymer is also provided using collagen hydrolysate, which is obtained from collagenous sources such as chrome shaving dust, hide/skin trimming, leather buffing dust.
