Disclosed herein is a novel composition comprising common salt and calcium compound for preservation of hide/skin. A process for  preservation of hides and skins using the said composition is also provided. The process is envisaged to have tremendous application  potential in the leather industry for substantial reduction of TDS and chlorides in the waste streams. The process is expected to enhance the economic and environmental benefits to leather processing industry.
