A process for production of low Sulfur residual fuel oil (sulfur content less than 2 weight %) from unprocessed thermally cracked residue such as vis breaker bottom tar (VBU tar or Vistar) containing sulfur compound around 6 weight % through oxidation of the stream and separating the oil phase from oxidized phase using an selective solvent system selected from the group such as low boiling paraffinic solvent and polar selective solvent such as aqueous NMP, Furfural and Di-methyl formamide (DMF).
