IN359671: A process for preparation of eco-friendly and biodegradable ester base stocks for gear lubricant of enclosed industrial gear drives and reference samples of biolubricant
The mono and three complex/mixed polyol esters have been synthesized by using non conventional, macro porous strongly acidic cation exchange resin catalyst and analyzed for NMR, IR and GC MS. Physico-chemical characterization and tribological performance was also carried out. On the basis of the physico-chemical properties and tribological performance the monoester products are showing interesting results for application as reference samples. The polyol products were found to have good potential for use as ecofriendly and biodegradable base stock for formulation as EP type of Industrial gear oil VG-68 (IS-8406-2004). These products can be used for the gear lubricants intended for use in enclosed and semi-enclosed industrial gear systems where tooth pressures and pitch-line velocities are severe enough to render the use of straight mineral oils unsuitable. These products do not cover lubricants for food and drug industries and those required to be operated under extremely severe and hostile environment. So far no lube base oils having mixed acids and complex polyol and monoesters as base oil, which is completely biodegradable, has been reported as industrial gear oils and reference samples.
