IN337544: A process for the preparation of novel 3d load bearing osteoinductive sintered hydroxyapatite blocks useful as bone grafts and scaffolds

The invention discloses a process for the synthesis of load-bearing, sintered porous 3d blocks of hydroxyapatite, exhibiting  osteoinductivity. As a value addition to existing knowledge, present invention neither employs a hlgll 1- ssur eompilction of  hydroxyr:patite powder, nor conventional pore formers to create porosity. On the contrary, the invention makes use of the principle of biomineralization for the in situ synthesis of hydroxyapatite in carboxymethyl cellulose/polyethylene glycol. Organic polymer provides a matrix for in situ nucleation and growth of hydroxyapatite nanoparticles. Removal of the polymer during sintering provides porosity in the range of 35-7Q%, leaving 3d-sintered hydroxyapatite structure intact and exhibiting compressive strength of 4-10  MPa.
