The invention provides a process for the preparation of ethanol from starch. Specifically, the invention provides a process for the preparation of ethanol from starch such as tapioca, potato, sweet sorghum, rice by liquification and saccharification of starch and subsequent fermentation of mono saccharides to ethanol in presence of thermophilic micro-organisms.
