The invention provides a process for the preparation of stabilized coal water slurry using a starch based additive i.e. starch xanthide. The preparation of the starch based additive is easy and does not involve any sophisticated methods. The process is applicable for stabilization of high concentration coal water slurry for use in boilers as substitute for fuel oil. The starch based additive developed can be a replacement of synthetic commercial additives that are presently used for the same purpose.
