Department of Space (DoS)

Established in 1972, the Department of Space (DoS), Government of India, is the nodal department responsible for promoting the development and application of space science and technology for the socio-economic development of the country. The Department formulates policies, plans and oversees the implementation of the Indian space programme through its constituent organizations, including the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), National Atmospheric Research Laboratory (NARL), North Eastern-Space Applications Centre (NE-SAC), and Semi-Conductor Laboratory (SCL).

DoS is at the forefront of developing indigenous space technologies and capabilities in satellite communication, Earth observation, navigation, launch vehicles, space exploration, and space-based applications. It supports a wide range of national priorities, including communication, weather forecasting, resource mapping, disaster management, agriculture, urban planning, environmental monitoring, and scientific research.

The Department also promotes international cooperation, capacity building, and innovation to strengthen India's space ecosystem and advance the country's position as a leading spacefaring nation.
