The Department of Science and Technology (DST) is leading efforts to design, develop, and manufacture medical instruments, equipment, and devices indigenously in India. The focus is now on developing prototypes, transferring the technology to a suitable industry, manufacturing locally with clearances and approvals, and reaching the market. The DST is establishing Regional Hubs to facilitate this process, with two already in operation at Anna University, Chennai, and the third at Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Mangalore. The Hub will cater to institutions in the coastal belt from Palghat to Goa, particularly Mangalore and nearby areas. The activity of the Hub will be divided into three phases: converting laboratory models or prototypes into marketable products, competing RD activities of proven concepts, and establishing a sustainable system without external funding.
