Project Overview

Contemporary spintronics focuses on the generation and manipulation of magnon-driven spin currents, which scatter differently from their charge analogues. The discovery of the Spin Seebeck Effect, which used a thermal gradient to generate spin currents, has led to the development of an Acoustic Spin Pumping (ASP) apparatus. This apparatus can be used to investigate prototypical spintronic systems like iron garnets, multiferroics, and shape memory alloys. The ASP will enable the comparison of acoustic spin pumping with the Spin Seebeck Effect and existing theoretical models, while also understanding the nature of magnon-phonon interaction in multifunctional quantum materials. Surface acoustic wave-magnon interactions will also be investigated in selected systems with incipient Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya antisymmetric exchange coupling. This proposal is expected to significantly contribute to our understanding of phonon-magnon interactions, which are interesting for fundamental research and potential technological applications.
