Project Overview

The study of nuclear structure and reaction mechanisms induced by radioactive and weakly bound nuclei has gained significant interest in recent years. Elastic scattering and breakup measurements are useful tools for investigating unusual static features like extended halos or neutron skins in light nuclei and the dynamic effects of the process. Coupled channel calculations can help in infer the relative importance of these effects. Wolly-bound nuclei have correlations of valence particles that significantly distort their shell structure and collective properties, producing a strong coupling to the continuum and characteristic dynamic polarization in the optical potential. For nuclei with halo structure and low binding energy, breakup and transfer reactions may compete with elastic scattering, damping the Fresnel peak in the elastic angular distribution at energies close to the Coulomb barrier. Tightly-bound nuclei can have configurations related to their deformation, with quadrupole excitation and reorientation effects playing a role in the elastic process. The proposal aims to study the static and dynamic features in the elastic scattering of boron isotopes, ⁸B, ¹⁰B, and ¹¹B as projectiles on nonzero spin targets. Each configuration of the boron isotopes can lead to a different prevalent effect in elastic scattering. stable/weakly bound beams are available at 14 MV Pelletron Accelerator at TIFR‒BARC, Mumbai, and IUAC, New Delhi, with an 8B-proton halo beam from EXOTIC facility at Legnaro National Laboratory (LNL) or another feasible facility.
