Project Overview
The northeastern region (NER) of India represents a rich treasure of various Citrus genetic resources, many of wild and semi-wild species of citrus constitutes important source of livelihood and nutritional security to rural farming communities. Firstly, our proposal involves the extraction, purification and characterization of high value secondary metabolites from major citrus fruit species {species (~15) and varieties (~50)} for their nutraceutical and therapeutic properties from the region. Comparative analysis of essential oil content for the majority of local citrus species as well their varieties will be done for its commercialization. Phytochemical characterization, antioxidant and antimicrobial potential will be of scientific and industrial value. Quantification of natural valuable chemical compounds of nutraceutical interest (especially flavonoids) from different parts will help to obtain nutraceutical enriched value‐added food products for commercial purposes
Achievements
Fresh lemon (Citrus limon) peels obtained from the Mizoram were extracted with hexane and the hexane extract on purification by column chromatography yielded5,7 dimethoxy coumarin which was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. The citrus grandis peels collected from Nagaland(26.1584° N, 94.5624° E) were extracted with hexane and the hexane extract on purification by column chromatography yielded isoimperatorin whereas the methanolic extract resulted in the formation of the sucrose
