About

Tuberculosis (TB) is a reemerging and chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC); it affects livestock, wildlife, and humans. M. avium paratuberculosis (MAP) infection may lead to huge economic and production losses of the country. Infection of MAP in wild life may act as reservoir of infection for domestic livestock and vice versa which leads to negative energy balance and also damages immune system, making them susceptible to infections. Low attention to chronic and insidious infections, e.g., MAP, particularly in deer, yak, mithun and double humped camel could lead decline in their populations in India. In this study tests like fecal microscopy, fecal culture as “Gold standard” and other molecular tests will provide key insight into prevalence and transmission of MTBC and MAP and sequencing for the confirmation of new isolatesfrom free ranging and captive hangul and double humped camel population of Kashmir and Ladakh.

Achievements

The project involved collecting fecal samples from diverse wildlife and domestic animals across Kashmir, Ladakh, and northeastern India, testing for Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP). Samples underwent staining, PCR, culture, and antibody detection, revealing MAP prevalence of 37.8% via microscopy and PCR, with the Bison strain circulating among sheep and goats.
