About

The project aims to investigate the role of chemical signals involved in insect-plant interactions of selected, crop pests unique to NER. The feasibility of using these semiochemical components in IPM strategies will be explored. The objectives focus on isolating and identifying the phyto-semiochemical cues involved in insect-insect and insect-plant interactions and identify novel functional traits in target crops. The study will help understand the olfactory basis of ecological interactions and will provide useful information in the development of control strategies in these crops. The new information will be of value to farmers, scientists and industry and contribute to improve productivity. The project will provide insights on novel chemical communication systems and biological functions involving semiochemicals of important model systems unique to NER.

Achievements

Potent kairomones like α-pinene, β- myrcene, etc., for O. longicollis; β-caryophyllene, valencene etc., for B. dorsalis; p-xylene, psi.cumene etc., for B. subcostatum; Ethyl benzoate,Ethyl-2-hexanoate, etc., for E. fullonica; β- caryophyllene, Limonene for A. versteegi and pheromone compounds like 5-octadecanol, 9-Octadecen-1-ol, etc., O. longicollis; 1,4-Diacetylbenzene, Carbonic acid, nonyl vinyl ester, etc., for B. dorsalis; 13- Docosenamide, (Z), 13-Docosenoic acid, (Z)-, etc., for E. fullonica were identified for the standardization of synthetic blends with the help of GCEAD/MS.
