Project Overview

The north-eastern region is greatly deficit in production of both local fish production and conventional feed ingredients making aquaculture development highly imperative but practically difficult. We intend to undertake large scale demonstration of cost- effective on-farm cultivation and utilization of Wolffia globosa as a feed resource for carps in collaboration with Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of Tripura. We presume that the cost- effective local production of a proven renewable feed resource of high turnover rates would greatly facilitate local fish production, augment productivity and enhance farmers’ income. Further, it would also open up a completely new avenue to the farmers for improving their livelihood security. Simultaneously, we also propose to extract, characterize and quantify select bioactive compounds for future applications and/or product development for use in aquaculture for growth, stress amelioration and physiological status improvements.

Achievements

Govt. of Tripura completed 03 nos. of training program covering 43 nos. of beneficiaries from the selected Bio-villages and demonstration of wolffia globossa cultivation among the beneficiaries followed by distribution of wolffia with the support of College of Fishery. Further, it has been monitoring the installed pond liner for wolffia production and other technical inputs.
