About

The immune system of our bodies is an incredibly intricate network of specialized cells that protects us from various infectious agents. Abnormality or dysfunction of the immune system may cause an unexpected immune response as seen in the cases of hypersensitivity, autoimmunity, or immune-deficiency. An immunomodulatory agent can activate different cell populations of the immune system, modify the production of cytokines, and initiate the production of molecules that take part in the modulation and enhancement of the immune response. Ethno-botanical formulations offer a promising starting point because of their complex chemical composition. The Eastern Himalayan region of India with special reference to Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Manipur is known for its richness in bio-diversity and covers the major occurrence of medicinal plants.

Achievements

Phytochemical and Antioxidant Profile: Illicium griffithii fruit extracts, particularly the aqueous fraction (F4), are rich in phenolics and flavonoids such as rutin, quercetin, myricetin, and linalool, showing strong antioxidant activity in DPPH and ABTS assays. Anti-inflammatory Activity: The extracts and fractions reduced nitric oxide production in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells, lowered pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6), and enhanced anti-inflammatory cytokine expression in vitro and in vivo models, including DSS-induced colitis in mice. Histological and Clinical Improvements: Treatment with F4 significantly alleviated DSS-induced colonic damage, reduced immune cell infiltration, and preserved villus architecture, indicating protective effects against acute inflammation and intestinal injury.
