Project Overview

Black and red rice, nutritionally rich a cereal germplasm of Himalaya region and expensive grain, have increasing global demand with a huge economy, expected to cross US$ 250 billion by 2025, which has potential to contribute to Government of India mission of trillion economy. To meet growing global demand and quality parameters, colour rice grain production and production acreage have to be increased using agribiotechnology approaches and tools. It is possible by i) systematic germplasm characterization for nutrition quality and deep genomic sequence data; ii) improvement in yield by manipulating grain numbers, lodging and drought tolerance; and iii) systematic health benefit evaluation. Despite the availability of several coloured rice germplasms and pre-breeding materials, very limited success has been achieved to develop improved varieties, which can be grown under other Indan weather conditions and plain regions.

Achievements

The insertion/deletion (InDels) of 90 diverse tea genotypes using paired-end whole genome re-sequencing data (10x) data generated from this project. Moreover, selection of the candidate genes responsible for secondary metabolites was done (mainly from published literature) for the identification of region specific copy number variations (CNVs) among these candidate genes. Further, after filtering biallelic SNPs identified in the study among the 90diverse tea genotypes, region specific haplotype identification from the filtered SNPs of 90genotypes is done. This Database was mainly developed from a previously funded project from Tea Board, Ministry of Commerce, GOI using in-house sequenced reference genome C. Sinensis var. assamica (TV1) which is published.
