Project Overview

A system in computer science possibly refers to one of the following; a network of computers, a network of fire alarms, a network of surveillance cameras, a network of various digital circuits. By placing monitors in a system one can identify faults, abnormal events, etc, a fundamental task in the design of reliable and fault tolerant systems. A natural optimization is to identify the minimum number of monitors for a system under design. This application serves as a motivation for this project proposal. The objective of this proposal is to look at this optimization problem from a graph-theoretic setting, and carry out computing and complexity study. In particular, we wish to investigate domination and its variations for graphs satisfying some specific structural properties. We strongly believe that the results that will be obtained as part of this investigation shall advance this research area and may act as a framework for other combinatorial problems in mathematics and computing.
