Project Overview

The global transport paradigm is transitioning towards adopting, deploying, and developing environment-friendly systems. The research community from automobiles and academia is working to meet future challenges associated with electric vehicles, like cost, efficient drivetrain design (machine, power converter, and transmission/gear), battery technology, magnet-free machine design, and charging solutions. In this project, to fulfil these technical gaps, we propose an efficient gear-free powertrain for EVs with a magnet-less machine, reduced footprints, cost, fault-tolerant capabilities, and lesser maintenance. The magnet-free design helps in make-in-India systems by banning the importation of magnets from China, lessening pollution levels involved in the extraction of permanent magnets. The key advantages of the proposed project are, • Rare earth magnets free design • Electromagnets on the rotor are created with innovative inductive wireless power transfer. • Offers high torque density (Nm/kg), power density, and enhanced torque-speed range. • The space on the rotor is fully utilized to place the electromagnets as well as power electronics over a conventional switched reluctance motor (SRM). • Current ratings of the copper wires and power converters of the proposed ERSRM are reduced. • Overall efficiency is high at full load operation due to reduced current drawn in the stator end. • Gear-less solution for designing the powertrain of EVs
