Project Overview

This study explores rhamnolipid derivatives' design, synthesis, and antimicrobial properties to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Rhamnolipids, natural biosurfactants with antimicrobial and anti-biofilm properties, are enzymatically modified using enzymes such as lipases to conjugate them with aromatic compounds, enhancing their efficacy against resistant pathogens. These derivatives can be produced from rhamnolipids synthesized by Pseudomonas aeruginosa using oily waste as a carbon source, making the process cost-effective. The study focuses on optimizing reaction parameters for synthesis and characterizing the physicochemical properties of the derivatives. Their antimicrobial activity will be tested against common pathogens, including multidrug-resistant strains. In silico studies will also be performed to understand molecular interactions and the mode of action of the derivatives. Limited research exists on the enzymatic modification of rhamnolipids for improved properties against multidrug-resistant pathogens. This study aims to develop more effective, sustainable antimicrobial agents as alternatives to traditional antibiotics by exploring these modifications.
