Project Overview
Hydrogen is the cleanest fuel available today, making its integration into existing energy conversion systems, such as the technologically mature and reliable Compression Ignition (CI) engines, imperative. To further enhance engine performance and minimize emissions, this study proposes the induction of ammonia gas through the intake manifold alongside hydrogen. A novel experimental setup is envisioned, comprising an onboard mini HHO generator and ammonia gas induction system, which will enable CI engines to efficiently utilize both traditional fuels and onboard-generated hydrogen. The ammonia gas will be supplied via a cylinder through the intake manifold, while additives will be used for ammonia-hydrogen enrichment with biodiesel to further curb exhaust emissions. Experiments are planned on this hybrid system to evaluate its performance and analyze the results. In addition, a mathematical model of the hybrid system will be developed to support and complement the experimental efforts. This model will help identify a focused range of parameters for experimentation, expediting the research process. The results from the mathematical model will also be used to validate the experimental findings. Integrating hydrogen and ammonia, along with suitable additives, into CI engines is anticipated to not only reduce emissions but also improve fuel efficiency, thereby enhancing overall performance. Experimental outcomes and emission characteristics will be systematically analyzed, and computational results will be compared to optimize engine performance further. As a deliverable to the automotive industry, this research aims to propose a novel hybrid vehicle concept. It includes a compact and innovative strap-on module, designed to meet evolving stringent emission standards for both on-road and off-road CI engines. This module has the potential to be patented as a transformative solution for cleaner and more efficient transportation systems.
