Project Overview

Research Goals and Impact The proposal sets forth three aims: synthesizing and characterizing novel metal complexes, evaluating their catalytic efficiency in ROP and ROCOP reactions, and elucidating stereocontrol mechanisms. These objectives seek to advance stereoselective polymerization, enabling sustainable production of high-performance stereocomplex PLA. This research promises to open new markets for biodegradable plastics and foster a circular economy. Current State of Research The document explores the environmental crisis stemming from oil-derived plastics and emphasizes the need to shift towards biodegradable alternatives like PLA. It reviews progress in catalyst design, challenges in achieving high activity and selectivity, and highlights the necessity for robust industrial catalysts. Proposed Methodology The methodology outlines the synthesis and characterization of ligands and catalysts, polymerization studies, and exploration of polymerization kinetics and mechanisms. Comprehensive analytical techniques will be employed to thoroughly understand the catalysts and polymers generated. Expected Economic and Environmental Benefits The socio-economic benefits include establishing a pilot plant for converting agricultural waste into bioplastics, fostering partnerships with local farmers, and creating skilled jobs in the polymer sector. The environmental assessment aims to ensure significant carbon footprint reductions compared to conventional plastics. Dissemination and Future Directions Results will be disseminated via peer-reviewed publications, patents, and workshops to engage the scientific community and industry stakeholders. Collaboration is emphasized as vital to the advancement of sustainable polymers.
