This study aims to undertake a comprehensive and detailed taxonomic investigation of the Indian representatives of the genus Cirsium Mill. (Asteraceae). The primary focus will be on correct species identification, up-to-date nomenclature, detailed description with illustration and photographs, distribution, phenology, conservation status, uses, etc. The study will provide detailed information on each species’ distribution, phenology, conservation status, and documented or potential uses. Special emphasis will be given to explore possible sustainable uses of the taxa, wherever applicable. In addition, available information on cytology, palynology, biochemistry, and other relevant biological data will be compiled to support taxonomic and ecological understanding. A key focus area of this investigation will be the morpho-anatomical analysis of the cypsela, a potentially significant character set for species-level identification and for elucidating morphological evolution within the genus. Such analyses may also help clarifying taxonomic relationships and affinities among Indian taxa of Cirsium. The outcome of this work will be a comprehensive and user-friendly identification manual for Indian Cirsium, designed to assist students, researchers, forest officials, conservation managers, policymakers, and the general public. This manual will serve as a vital tool for understanding the diversity, key diagnostic characters, distribution, threats, and conservation needs of these taxa. By thoroughly documenting the Indian species of Cirsium, the project aims to contribute significantly to the conservation and sustainable utilization of the country’s biological diversity. Furthermore, by highlighting the potential applications of different Cirsium taxa, the study may also open avenues for their use in breeding programs and the development of novel cultivars.
