Project Overview
Rationale: The abuse of over-the-counter drugs (also known as OTC drugs) is a major public health issue in India. Over-the-counter (OTC) drugs have been linked to an increase in improper usage, addiction, and even mortality because they are so easily accessible without a prescription. Despite their convenience and accessibility, pharmacy platforms in India pose challenges in terms of regulating the use of over-the-counter drugs. Nudging is a promising intervention that can be used in pharmacy platforms to promote responsible use of over-the-counter drugs and to prevent drug misuse. Addressing the issue of OTC drug abuse through the implementation of nudging interventions can help India meet its SDG targets while also promoting overall health and well-being. To be tested hypothesis/model: The overarching hypothesis of this study is that nudging interventions can be effective in promoting responsible use of OTC medications and preventing drug misuse in Indian pharmacy platforms. Nudging algorithms that allow for nudge personalization can improve intervention efficiency. Nudging interventions have the potential to have a long-term, positive impact on user behavior. Positive user perceptions of nudging interventions are possible, and user characteristics and nudging material can influence how engaged users are with the treatments. It is possible to establish ethical guidelines for the use of nudging on Indian pharmacy platforms. •Main Experiments: A randomized controlled trial will be used in this study. The study will include at least 500 participants. • Randomization: Participants will be assigned to either the control or intervention groups at random. • Intervention: The intervention group will receive nudging interventions aimed at encouraging responsible use of OTC medications. These nudges will be delivered via the physical pharmacy platform and will be personalized based on individual user behavior and preferences. There will be no interventions for the control group. • Evaluation: The study will compare the effects of nudging interventions on user behavior in the intervention and control groups. • Framework: Based on the stakeholder input, guidelines for the use of nudging in pharmacy platforms in India will be developed.
