Project Overview
India, with its varied agro-climatic conditions, is well-suited for the production of high-value ornamental bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, lilies, and calla lilies. The Himalayan regions offer an ideal environment for bulb cultivation. Flower bulbs are among the most commercially significant commodities in the floriculture trade, with varieties like Tulip (Tulipa hybrida), Daffodil (Narcissus pseudonarcissus), Lilium hybrids, and Calla lily (Zantedeschia aethiopica) ranking among the top ten cut flowers globally. Despite having favorable conditions for growing these bulbs, India is heavily reliant on imports from countries like the Netherlands, Israel, and New Zealand. According to Volza's India Import data, 150 shipments of flower bulbs were imported between March 2023 and February 2024, resulting in a substantial foreign exchange expenditure and limiting opportunities for domestic farmers. This dependence exists due to the lack of indigenous mass production and handling technologies. Furthermore, farmers face challenges in accessing affordable bulbs and lack knowledge on propagation, harvesting, and storage methods, including dormancy-breaking conditions. There is an urgent need to standardize farmer-friendly technologies for the production of quality planting material to reduce import costs. Himachal Pradesh, with its favorable conditions, can serve as a model for this transformation. By adopting modern techniques, improving infrastructure, and focusing on quality, India could not only reduce reliance on imports but also become a global exporter of ornamental bulbs. This proposal aims to develop mass propagation technologies for these high-value bulbs, using plant tissue culture for mass production followed by field transfer. Techniques like scaling for lilies, scooping and chipping for tulips, bulb chipping and scoring for daffodils, and division for calla lilies will be employed. The domestic production of these bulbs will provide a significant boost to the floriculture industry, allowing locally produced bulbs to be better adapted to Indian climates. Training programs will be organized to disseminate these technologies to farmers. A robust domestic bulb production system will help India tap into international markets, leveraging favorable growing conditions and competitive labor costs.
