Project Overview
Orchidaceae, one of the largest families of flowering plants, comprises around 28,000 species globally, with India being home to 1,256 species across 155 genera, including 388 endemic species. Orchids display remarkable diversity, adapting to various habitats as epiphytes, terrestrials, or saprophytes. Most orchids in India are epiphytic, followed by terrestrials and mycoheterotrophs. They are highly valued for their beauty and medicinal properties, with many species used in traditional medicine to treat conditions such as tuberculosis, infections, and chronic wounds. Some orchids are also essential components in Ayurvedic formulations. Despite their beauty and medicinal uses, orchids face significant threats due to habitat loss, deforestation, slow growth, and overcollection. India's orchid diversity is concentrated in the Himalayas, Western and Eastern Ghats, and the North-Eastern states, with 67 species reported in Andhra Pradesh. However, several species are endangered, including Cypripedium elegans and Vanda spathulata nearing extinction. Conservation efforts include habitat protection, the establishment of sanctuaries, the propagation of Orchids and reintroduction into protected environments. Tissue culture and genetic studies play a vital role in species identification and conservation. Molecular techniques, such as DNA barcoding, are also essential for understanding population structures and phylogenetic relationships. These methods are increasingly used for species conservation, with DNA barcoding offering high success rates for species discrimination. Phytochemical studies show that orchids possess significant medicinal potential. They contain compounds like alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, terpenoids, and phenols, which contribute to their antioxidant, anticancer, and other therapeutic properties. For example, Dendrobium loddigesii produces moscatilin, a compound known for its anticancer activity, while Cottonia peduncularis and Habenaria longicorniculata show strong antioxidant effects. The present proposed research work aims to study the orchid populations in forest regions of Andhra Pradesh, particularly Simhachalam, Maredumilli, Nallamala, and Seshachalam Hills, as well as Tamil Nadu's Yercaud Hills. Conservation status will be assessed using molecular techniques, focusing on the preservation of these valuable and endangered species.
