Project Overview

The quest for novel nutraceuticals and bioactive compounds has intensified in recent years, driven by a global surge in health consciousness and the demand for natural therapeutic alternatives. Among the rich tapestry of biodiversity in northeast India, Meghalaya stands out as a treasure trove of indigenous flora with untapped potential. One such promising underutilized plant species is Haematocarpus validus (Miers) Bakh.f. ex-Forman, locally known as Khoon phal. Haematocarpus validus, a wild edible plant endemic to this region, has been traditionally utilized by local communities for its presumed health benefits. Despite its longstanding presence in indigenous practices, the scientific exploration of its nutraceutical properties and bioactive compounds remains limited. This study aims to bridge this gap by systematically investigating the nutritional and medicinal potential of Haematocarpus validus, positioning it as a novel source of nutraceuticals. Through comprehensive bioprospecting using advanced analytical techniques, this research endeavors to unveil the phytochemical profile, mineral composition, and bioactive potential of Khoon phal. By doing so, it seeks to underscore the value of traditional knowledge and promote the sustainable utilization of wild edible plants, contributing to both local well-being and global health landscapes. Rationale: The global rise in health consciousness and the growing preference for natural health supplements have catalyzed the search for novel nutraceuticals. In this context, the exploration of wild edible plants, particularly those with a rich heritage of traditional use, presents a promising avenue for discovering new bioactive compounds. Haematocarpus validus is one such wild edible plant native to the biodiversity-rich state of Meghalaya in northeast India. Despite its historical significance in local ethnomedicine, there is paucity of scientific research on its nutritional and medicinal properties. This gap underscores the necessity of a systematic bioprospecting effort to unravel its potential health benefits. Hypothesis: From the traditional system of knowledge, Haematocarpus validus Khoon phal possesses significant nutraceutical properties and bioactive compounds that can be systematically identified and characterized through bioprospecting. These compounds may include essential minerals, unsaturated fatty acids, quinic acid, and natural antioxidants, which collectively contribute to its potential health benefits, such as hepatoprotective effects and enhancement of nutritional value.
