Project Overview
The aim of this present work is to develop an indigenous powder manufacture process as an import substitution and Make in India program. Currently, HAL and ISRO-IPRC, etc., are importing the metallic and ceramic powders from abroad to develop thermal barrier coatings for their engines and rocket nozzle surfaces. Hence, it is found necessary to develop an indigenous process for the same to address the needs of strategic sector needs. As shown in the scheme, the CSIR-CECRI is proposing to develop NiAl, Ca and yttria stabilized ZrO2 powders in this work through molten salt synthesis and RF-plasma melting and atomization process. CECRI will develop process and demonstrate production capacity of 1 kg/day. In addition to this, HAL- Engine Division and ISRO-IPRC will validate the powders through comparison on physical properties between CECRI powders and import powders. Subsequently, the powders also validated through the development of thermal barrier coatings and validate by the performance on metallurgical and mechanical properties. Finally, Technology transfer to the industry will be done.
