Project Overview

The project ‘Genetic Enhancement of Local Soft-Flesh Cucumber of Mizoram for Gynoecious Parthenocarpic Expression and β-carotene Content through Marker-Assisted Selection’ aims to address key challenges in Mizoram agriculture, focusing on improving productivity, nutritional value, and climate resilience of local cucumbers. Mizoram traditional agriculture, slash and burn method and relying on rainfed systems, is vulnerable to unpredictable weather patterns and climate change. The local soft-flesh cucumber, which faces low yields and genetic erosion, is central to the project’s goals of enhancing both agricultural productivity and community development. The project’s hypothesis posits that integrating gynoecious, parthenocarpic traits, and β-carotene will not only increase yield and nutritional value but also will provide foster rural entrepreneurship. Using Marker Assisted Selection (MAS), these traits will be efficiently transferred into local cucumber lines, ensuring climate resilience while preserving the distinctive soft flesh texture. Key experiments include: 1. Stabilizing the soft flesh cucumber line through selfing and phenotypic evaluation of 132 local accessions. 2. Developing gynoecious parthenocarpic lines using inbreeding and PGRs to enhance fruit set and yield. 3. Quantifying β-carotene levels through spectrophotometry and HPLC to address malnutrition. 4. Validating molecular markers for soft-flesh texture using Bulk Segregant Analysis (BSA) for precise and speed cucumber improvement. 5. Incorporating parthenocarpic and β-carotene traits using MAS. The expected outcomes include increased climate resilience, poverty alleviation, and rural empowerment, particularly for tribal women and youth. The project will foster entrepreneurship in seed production, agritech, and value added products, contributing to the economic growth of Mizoram. Additionally, it aligns with India’s Smart Village initiative by promoting sustainable rural economies and preserving local biodiversity. This initiative contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) such as No Poverty (SDG 1), SDG 8 (Decent work and economic growth), Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Good Health (SDG 3), and Climate Action (SDG 13), positioning Mizoram as a model for Smart Villages and a Viksit Bharat-2047
