Project Overview

The Thar-ECHOES project is a citizen science-driven initiative aimed at promoting ecological awareness, habitat monitoring, and landscape restoration in the Thar Desert. This transdisciplinary effort brings together local communities, students, and scientists to observe and analyze ecological dynamics across contrasting landscapes—those dominated by the invasive species Prosopis juliflora and the traditionally preserved Orans, which are sacred community-conserved groves. Despite its arid and harsh environment, the Thar Desert hosts unique biodiversity and resilient ecosystems. However, mounting ecological pressures—especially the spread of P. juliflora, originally introduced for afforestation and erosion control—are threatening this delicate balance. Its unchecked proliferation has altered native plant communities, depleted groundwater, degraded soil quality, and disrupted local ecological networks. In contrast, Orans offer a glimpse into the sustainable land-use practices of local communities, where biodiversity, soil health, and water conservation are maintained through traditional knowledge systems. Thar-ECHOES seeks to bridge this ecological contrast by building a robust framework for long-term environmental monitoring and restoration, informed by both scientific inquiry and indigenous wisdom. The project will generate high-resolution data on biodiversity, vegetation cover, land-use patterns, and microbial health indicators, with a particular focus on soil ecosystems. Comparative analyses between P. juliflora-infested zones and Orans will highlight ecological degradation versus resilience, helping to shape evidence-based restoration models. The methodology integrates low-cost, scalable technologies with community participation. Tools such as Foldscope microscopy, Winogradsky columns, 16S rRNA sequencing, and drone-based mapping will be deployed alongside ethnographic documentation of traditional conservation practices. Field data collection will be participatory, engaging school and college students, local communities, and volunteers through training modules and experiential learning platforms that align with India’s National Education Policy (NEP). An essential output of Thar-ECHOES will be the creation of open-access digital platforms and curriculum-linked learning modules, fostering environmental literacy among youth and enabling sustained citizen engagement in ecological monitoring. These tools will ensure that scientific findings are not confined to academic circles but are accessible and actionable for communities and policymakers alike. Ultimately, Thar-ECHOES envisions the revival of ecological harmony in the Thar Desert by weaving together traditional ecological knowledge and modern science. The project’s outcomes are expected to contribute not only to regional land management and biodiversity conservation policies but also serve as a replicable model for dryland ecosystems worldwide.
