Project Overview

Electric vehicles (EVs) have gained significant popularity worldwide as a sustainable solution to reduce pollution and combat climate change. In India, the EV market is witnessing rapid growth, driven by government policies, incentives, and an increasing consumer shift toward environmentally friendly transportation options. There has been a significant growth in electric vehicle (EV) sales in India recently. EV sales increased by 16 % from January 2023 to March 2024. There is a 26 % growth in electric four-wheeler (e4w) sales from February 2024 to March 2024. India's EV market targets to reach 30% of total vehicle sales by 2030, driven by strong government policies, domestic manufacturing incentives, and increasing consumer demand for sustainable transport. The genesis of this proposal lies in the intersection of India's ambitious electric vehicle (EV) goals and the critical need to address technological limitations that hinder widespread EV adoption. This proposal covers multiple domains within the electric vehicle (EV) powertrain, ranging from wide-bandgap (WBG) device packaging to the development of various components such as power electronics, inverters, chargers, and electric motors. The research encompasses a broad spectrum of areas, including: 1.Power Electronics: Designing and developing high-efficiency, high-power-density power electronic converters including dc-dc converters, using advanced WBG devices like SiC and GaN. 2.Electric Motors: Designing and optimizing high-performance electric motors for various EV applications, with techniques to minimize permanent magnets. 3.Inverter Technology: Creating innovative inverter topologies, such as integrated motor controllers, charger, and WBG based compact inverters. 4.Motor and Vehicle Control: Advanced controllers to meet the innovative motor designs and vehicle control systems for improved performance and safety. 5.Charging Methods: Developing advanced charging technologies, including wireless charging, unified public charging infrastructure, and compact & fast-charging solutions. 6.Battery Management Systems (BMS): Developing intelligent BMS to improve battery life, safety, and performance. 7.Thermal Management: Designing effective cooling solutions for power electronics and electric motors. 8.Reliability and Diagnostics: Developing techniques for assessing the reliability of EV components and implementing predictive maintenance strategies. 9.Power Semiconductor Modules: Indigenously design, model, fabricate, and characterize automotive SiC power modules, complemented with packaging. 10.Impact assessment: A comprehensive emissions impact assessment will be conducted to evaluate the environmental benefits of the proposed research. By fostering innovation across multiple domains, this project will contribute to reducing dependency on imports, enhancing domestic manufacturing capabilities, and accelerating the adoption of EVs.
