Project Overview
In order to improve the sustainability, durability, and efficiency of structural systems, advanced composite materials are being used more and more in the global construction sector. Although there are many composite materials available, Glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC) has become a popular option due to its unique set of qualities. For the past 50 years, GFRC has been in use because of its excellent moldability, fire resistance, mechanical qualities, excellent durability properties, and resistance to corrosive processes. GFRC is a composite material made by randomly distributing short-length glass fibers within a cementitious matrix. GFRC is mainly used for thin walled panel, cladding elements, acoustic barriers, permanent formwork, piping for sanitation network systems, and precast facade systems. Although GFRC was developed many years ago, its application is still less common than that of some other building materials, such steel or concrete. This is partly because its long-term performance has not been experimentally investigated. Therefore, in this study I will work on long-term durability assessment, creep and shrinkage behaviour etc. My aim in this study is to also reduce the usage of portland cement by replacing with other cementitious materials like fly ash, ground granulated blast furnace slag, and silica fumes etc., which will improve the sustainability of the GFRC.
