Outlier-Robust Signal Processing for Radar and Communication Systems

Project Overview

Advancements in wireless technologies have profoundly impacted modern society, ranging from radar to communication systems. Generally, a wide array of wireless systems operate and coexist, utilizing overlapping frequency bands for their functioning, leading to potential unknown interferences. A wireless system operating at a specific frequency can intentionally or unintentionally transmit unknown electromagnetic signals to disrupt the operation of other wireless systems. Furthermore, these systems function within an inhomogeneous environment and frequently encounter undesirable outlier signals due to several factors, including (i) unintentional or intentional (adversarial) electromagnetic interference from other radar or communication systems, (ii) the presence of moving targets situated in training range cells, and (iii) physical damage to sensors, antennas, or communication links. For example, an adversary may intentionally transmit an unknown electromagnetic signal, effectively creating an outlier or anomaly in the measurements done by the system. This may lead to a potential compromise on the effectiveness of the system. Furthermore, acts of sabotage may physically damage the sensors or antennas that are crucial for the proper functioning of the system. In this project, we propose to develop novel outlier-robust signal processing algorithms to detect the outliers in the measurements, thereby improving the performance of a radar and communication system. We approach this problem first by providing a modeling framework to incorporate the impact of outliers. Then, novel outlier estimation and elimination techniques will be developed to improve the overall system performance. We will compare the developed algorithms with the state-of-the-art methods in the literature to elucidate the advantages of the proposed methodologies.
