Hybrid Inverters: A WBG Assisted Soft-Switching IGBT Inverter for EVs

Project Overview

IGBT and SiC are two extremes of modern power conversion technology in terms of cost and efficiency. Therefore, STM electronics at APEC 2024 presented a “Hybrid Inverter” as an alternate and intermediate solution that can offer higher efficiencies at affordable prices. A Hybrid Inverter achieved this by using IGBT and SiC devices in 3:1 ratio to strategically eliminate low and medium load switching losses. Further, this converter enhances light load efficiency by shifting light load completely to SiC devices. However, this inverter suffers from labyrinthine gate driver, complex control, highly compromised reliability and loses soft switching at full load conditions. Further, curb weight of EVs itself is more than 1000Kgs and they seldom operate at light load. Therefore, STM’s hybrid inverters are more suitable for grid integration and data center power supply applications where light load conditions are frequent. In order to alleviate the said drawbacks, this project strives to propose WBG assisted soft-switching IGBT inverter to suit EV applications.
