Project Overview

The core remit of the proposed project is to develop an innovative, affordable nanotechnology-based solution for the early detection of diabetes and cardiac disorder – specifically Acute Myocardial Infraction (AMI). Since diabetic patients are known to exhibit persistent risks of contracting AMI, it is imperative to initially detect whether a patient is diabetic followed by predicting the occurrence of AMI during its onset. This proposal aims to highlight the commercial potential of a handheld nano-biosensor device for healthcare diagnostics. Conventional strategies for AMI diagnosis in diabetics face numerous limitations which limit their usage, especially in resource-limited regions. However, the proposed approach is expected to revolutionize the efficient management of diabetes and AMI towards enhanced patient outcomes. The project seeks to transform research into a marketable product, thereby becoming a paradigm shift in the healthcare sector. The handheld electrochemical nano-biosensor prototype will be designed to detect HbA1c (Glycated Haemoglobin) and CTnI (Cardiac Troponin I), the key biomarkers, for early detection of diabetes and AMI respectively based on antibody-antigen interactions. It must be noted that two different immuno-electrodes will be developed, each selective towards HbA1c and CTnI, which can be integrated into a single detector module using a simple plug-and-play approach. The prototype, currently non-existent in global market, will be capable of transmitting the relevant physiological data to nearby hospitals/clinics during the onset of alarming or chronic situations. This nano-biosensor will eventually serve as an alternative to complex diagnostic tools, making it ideal for Point-of-Care (POC) use and enabling timely doctor interventions via a connected health platform. The solution is envisioned to facilitate affordable detection of diabetes and AMI, along with real-time data capturing by healthcare personnel, which will undoubtedly save countless lives.
