Project Overview

Defense sector and specially sea borders are of interest for nations security interest. Naval ships, combat vehicles, submarines and torpedo plays major role in the security of country which holds open coastal borders. For country like India, having about 7500km of coastline, the naval security is of great interest. Considering current aggressive development of India, India need the novel technological advancements in their defense. Underwater warfare is the most complicated defense system when it comes to technology and country’s internal defense systems. The war strategies mainly depending upon the neighboring/enemy country’s defense systems. Wang et al. (2023) and Qi et al. (2023) put their focus on China’s development strategies for combat naval gun for underwater attack and defence system based on supercavitation drag reduction technology. Along with extensive summary of the existing weaponry system worldwide, they listed drag reduction and range extension is one of the key features highly demanded for supercavitation projectiles. From research point of view, literature exists in three major directions: torpedo modification and analysis of supercavitation structure around of torpedo; vertical entry of torpedo; fundamental study regarding microscopic and macroscopic cavitation investigation. From technical point of view, cavitation is useful in high-speed underwater vehicles, such as projectile, torpedoes, and bullets, commonly termed as SUV (supercavitating vehicles). Due to extremely higher speed, these objects normally prone to cavitation around them. In some cases, the cavitation covers the complete body of the SUV at highest speed. Supercavitation reduces the wetted surface thereby reduce the viscous drag forces on the body. The supercavitation results into multiple advantages: due to reduction in drag SUV can travel at higher speed, it can travel longer, it can carry higher ammunition payload. The higher speed also makes then to detect later to the enemy’s detection systems like sonar. Supercavitation generation mechanism took place at the in the nose section by adding artificial cavitator. In additional, at the read of torpedo an extra thrust system is introduced to increase the speed causing supercavitation. This way, the desired cavity envelope of vapor phase is generated around the SUV. From the state of the art it is necessary to develop the SUV with supercavitation, producing lower stable drag reducing undesirable noise and vibrations. Also, a novel efficient system is important to be designed. Here we are proposing preliminary investigation of multi-torpedo launching system.
