Postbiotics derived from nomadic Lactobacilli for treatment of polybiofilm infections in diabetic foot ulcers.

Project Overview

Diabetes affects 17% of India's population, making it the world's diabetic capital. Diabetic Association of India (DAI) raises the alarm about diabetic foot ulcers and its inadequate care in the healthcare system. In India, diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are the cause of around 100,000 leg amputations/ year and an expense of approximately $1,960 for complete treatment of DFUs. To treat diabetic foot ulcers, a new therapeutic strategy is warranted. Probiotics based on Lactobacilli have become a novel approach to fighting biofilm infections. Our most recent research revealed that nomadic groups of Lactobacilli exhibited a unique cell structure termed V-shaped multicellular structuring (VMS) that have been shown to trigger positive self-induced biofilms in Lactobacilli governed by LuxS quorum sensing system. Using postbiotics derived from V-shaped cells, the proposal intends to screen and identify yet uncharacterized Lactobacilli secreted metabolites (LSM) during VMS process. The newly identified LSM could assist to control biofilm-associated diabetic foot ulcer Infections.
