Project Overview
The Himalayas, one of the youngest and highest mountain ranges in the world, span approximately 2,400 km, with over 42 towering peaks. The Indian Himalayan Region (IHR), covering 533,604 sq. km from the Indus to the Brahmaputra, encompasses ten hill states and four Indian districts. This region boasts diverse landscapes, including sub-tropical pine forests, Ladakh's cold deserts, and thermal features such as the sulfur springs of Manikaran and Kheer Ganga. Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, lies nestled in the foothills at an elevation of 2,200 feet and is home to Shahastradhara, famed for its sulfur-rich springs and natural beauty. These springs, believed to possess medicinal properties, draw visitors seeking relief from skin and joint ailments. Despite the ecological and therapeutic significance of these springs, the microbial communities of the Himalayas remain largely unexplored. Limited efforts, such as the Earth Microbiome Project, have only scratched the surface of this biodiversity hotspot. To address this gap, we propose the project "Know the Unknown: The Pahadi Extremophiles." This initiative aims to comprehensively identify the microbiome of these sulfur springs, assess the impact of growing anthropogenic activities on microbial diversity, and investigate the functional dynamics of these ecosystems. Advancements in next-generation sequencing technologies over the last decade have significantly enhanced our ability to analyze microbial diversity through culture-independent methods. By integrating these approaches with traditional culture-dependent studies, this project seeks to uncover the unique microbial communities thriving under these extreme conditions. These findings could pave the way for groundbreaking biotechnological applications, harnessing the untapped potential of Himalayan extremophiles.
