Project Overview
This project aims to advance the genomic and phylogenetic characterization of Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri (Xcc), the pathogen responsible for citrus canker, by analysing isolates from key citrus-growing regions in India. Through whole-genome sequencing and comparative genomics, the research will unravel the genetic diversity and virulence determinants of native Xcc strains, offering insights into their pathogenic mechanisms. The project seeks to establish a robust pathosystem model using both tolerant and susceptible citrus cultivars, enabling a deeper understanding of the molecular dynamics underpinning plant-Xcc interactions. Furthermore, rhizosphere-derived actinobacterial strains will be evaluated for their antimicrobial properties, with the aim of devising biocontrol strategies targeting both Xcc and Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus. The outcomes of this research will be pivotal in developing sustainable management practices for mitigating citrus canker and citrus dieback (HLB), ultimately supporting enhanced citrus productivity in India.
