About
Tissue engineering strategies attempt to develop preformed engineered constructs replicating the anatomical architecture, biological and mechanical functionality of the target tissue as faithfully as possible. However even after 30 years of tissue engineering efforts a clinically relevant, functionally equivalent engineered joint cartilage tissue construct for load bearing applications could not be prepared. This proposal envisages a paradigm shift in cartilage tissue engineering strategies using 3D bioprinting by recapitulating the developmental program in a biomimetic way to develop phenotypically stable articular cartilage that is molecularly indistinguishable from native articular cartilage.
