About
Cardiac diseases are No.1 killer in India. Angioplasty, also known as Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI), has become an established procedure in treating Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) due to atherosclerosis, which has emerged as a major social epidemic in India. Stenting the plaqued artery is the most efficient solution for CAD. As compared to bare metal/drug eluting metal stents, the future technology is fully Bioresorbable (Drug Eluting ) Vascular Stents (BVS). They are made up of polymers that are fully resorbable inside the artery and leave no permanent implant behind after positive remodeling of the lumen.
Major work in case of BVS is to improve the mechanical properties and make it comparable to metallic stent and to stand on its own. In this proposal, the technology of manufacturing the BVS will be evolved and improved by using patented processing of medical grade polymer tubing and laser machining of patented stent design developed at IIT Delhi in the recent past. The cost of these BVS at present are 1.5-2.0 lakh per stent and is not affordable, this IMPRINT project will bring down the cost by way of indigeneous R&D to make it available to masses within 5 years.
